About Chomolhari:

Chomolhari, Jomo’lhari or Qomo Lhari is a mountain in the Himalayas, standing astride on the border between Yadong County of Tibet and the Paro district of Bhutan.

Trekking Chomolhari:

The trip combines a fascinating Himalayan trek to Chomolhari with a unique Bhutanese cultural immersion.  The adventure features trekking to Bhonte La (16,000 feet) visiting remote villages, knowing the traditional lifestyles of the local folk like yak-herders and highland farmers.

Chomolhari Trek itinerary:
  • Day 1-2: The trip begins with an early morning flight to Paro. Meeting with the trip leaders and starting for Thimpu (two hours drive). Sightseeing in Thimpu.

  • Day 3: Leaving for Punakha and Wngdue Valleys by passing through Dochula Pass (10,460 feet). The visitors see the ancient fortress of Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of Mochu and Pho Rivers.
  • Day 4: Returning to Thimpu and enjoying the day here.
  • Day 5:  Trekking begins from the Drugyel Dzong fortress (at 8,591 feet), located at a short drive northwest of Paro. The view of Cho day is clear, the view of Chomolhari is spectacular. Our molhari is clear and good from here given the weather conditions are good. Bhutanese support staff loads equipment and gear onto ponies as the adventurers begin trek past narrowing Paro River Valley. Arriving at Shana (9,480 feet). First night camping here.
  • Day 6: The trail continues further along Paro River into the high mountain land. The rocky and muddy trail enters Jigme Dorji National Park and ascends further. The trekkers cross bridges on small streams and finally arrive at Thangthangkha (12,088 feet). Evening camp here.

  • Day 7: View the beautiful nature in the surroundings. First views of Jitchu Drake at 22,470 feet and then the massive ice-covered east face of Chomolhari appears before the ice. Fascinating view. Camping beneath a ruined fortress at Jangothang, the Chomolhari base camp.
  • Day 8: Rest day in Jangothang
  • Day 9: Trail leads from Jangothang towards the last settlement in the valley and drops to Paro River. Reaching the turquoise blue Tsophu Lakes after crossing the river. Breathtaking views of Chomolhari, Chomolhari II and Jitchu Drake from here. Also not to be missed are Basingthang Peaks and a big snowy peak to the south called Chatarake. Camping in Dumzo (12,464 feet).
  • Day 10: Trekking across Takhung La. Bonte La is in the background. While climbing up small hills on either side of the pass, one gets glimpse of Kanchenjunga and Makalu in Nepal. The trail gradually goes downhill to reach Thombu Shong. Camping here.
  • Day 11: Climbing out of the valley to reach Thombu La Pass where the tourists would enjoy their last views of the high peaks. The day’s trek concludes with a steep descent to reach at Shana.

  • Day 12: Trekking from Shana to Drugyel Dzong. Bidding adieu to the trekking crew after the conclusion of the trek. Return to hotel in Paro.
  • Day 13: Driving from Paro to the trailhead at the base of Bhutan’s famous monastery Taktsang. Other points of attraction of the day’s trip are Kyichu Ihakhang and the Dungtse Lhathang.

  • Day 14 Paro: Depart from Bhutan.
