Get adventurous while trekking on the famous Eden to Addo route
Knysna is a Khoi khoi word which means ‘ferns’ this town has about seventy-six thousand inhabitants. This place lies in the western province of South Africa. It is also part of the famous garden route. This places lies to the south of the equator, and it is about seventy kilometers from the town of Georgia which lies on the N2 highway.
This region is world famous for its good quality timber. The timber from here was exported from as early as seventeen hundred and twenty.
This town owes a lot of its development to a local landowner called George Rex. This man landed in Cape Town in the late seventeen hundreds. This place was a difficult port to enter. Hence to ensure the safe passage of the larger vessels here, there was a harbor pilot who would be taken onboard to navigate through the passage and then the harbor pilot
would get off the ship. John Benn was a famous harbor pilot who was originally a shipwright from Mossel bay. This port eventually closed in the year nineteen fifty four.
After this a famous Norwegian family called Thesen, played an important role in the development of this place from the eighteen sixty nine. Thesen helped build the timber industry here into a major and sophisticated industry. Charles Thesen later became the Mayor of Knysna and remained so for many years.
If you go on the Eden to Addo Mega hike, it stretches for almost four hundred kilometers. The journey lasts for about seventeen days and the journey is completely epic. While on the journey, you will cross almost seven mountains stretches. There are many rivers that lie along the way too. This Mega hike has now become one of the biggest annual events that are followed in this region.
This hike is mainly aimed at reconnecting with the many natural areas that are otherwise quite neglected by the local people.
The journey starts about in the beautiful and plush forests of the southern cape at Knysna. This place is known for being home to many of the last forest elephants. Later on he rail goes all the way into the inland section of the Tsitsikamma National Park, after the park , the trail continues into Couga and then into the Baviaanskloof wilderness.
The Addo Elephant nation park is a major conservation area and is also a conservation success story. This place is sure to be on its way to becomes one of the largest protected areas in all of Africa.
The journey is quite challenging. However the rewards are excellent. Also the landscape here is vast and amazingly scenic. The local people call trekking here a form of active meditation.
