Located just a few miles from Recife, the lively northern port city of Brazil, the little coastal town of Porto de Galinhas is known for its uncrowded beaches, beautiful resorts, water sports and the seahorse nursery. Seahorse Viewing at Rio Maracaipe: While moving south along the coast from Porto de Galinhas, the Rio Maracaipe River enters the Atlantic Ocean from a shallow, broad bay. At the end of the sandy track, little wooden boats (jagandas) carry visitors towards the pools where one can get glimpse of sea horses while snorkeling. The delicate creatures are scooped into a gallon glass jug by a guide after being spotted so that they can be seen without being hurt.
