About Severn Bore: Severn Estuary, which drains into the Bristol Channel, features the second largest tidal range in the world (about 15 metres). Only Bay of Fundy has a greater range than this. During the highest tides, the rising water at Severn is funneled up the estuary into a wave that fast travels upstream against the river current. The largest bores (high waves caused by tidal bows) are visible in spring while the smaller ones are visible throughout the year. Severn Bore is a shock wave which is formed when the wave travels faster than the wave speed in water above the Bore.
